We have recently been reminded of the tragic 2020 case of a 10-year-old child who fell to their death down a 20ft maintenance shaft, having climbed through an unsecured fence on a building site in Glasgow.

Earlier this week (26th August 2024), the contract manager of the construction firm told the inquiry that security measures put in place after the devastating incident should have been there from the start. These included the installation of CCTV and motion sensors around the perimeter fence.

The company was fined nearly £900,000 for failing to secure the site.

The avoidable death of this child is a stark reminder that as well as viewing CCTV as a means to protect assets and workers and guard against vandalism in areas such as construction sites and quarries, the technology also plays a vital role in the protection of the local community.

This is especially important during school holidays, when children spend time playing outside and exploring their local surroundings.

We work with very many construction and quarry management teams who take the safety of their local communities every bit as seriously as that of their own teams.

They recognise the importance of deploying portable, CCTV cameras around their perimeters, seeking out models that incorporate powerful analytics functionality including motion detection; a lot choose to deploy the cameras with sirens which sound when motion is identified.

If you would like to ensure the 24/7 protection of the people living in the places in which you work, please do get in touch with us so that we can work together to make our construction sites and quarries safe and prevent any more avoidable deaths.
