At SRL Traffic Systems, sustainability is built into the way we innovate and manufacture. That’s why we’re proud to share a major milestone: we’re the first mobile intelligent transport system (ITS) manufacturer to have our greenhouse gas emissions-reduction target validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
What is SBTi?
The SBTi is a globally recognised climate action organisation backed by leading bodies like the United Nations Global Compact and the WWF. It exists to help companies like SRL set credible, science-aligned targets to reduce their environmental impact.
Our newly validated target? A 42% reduction in absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, using 2023 as the baseline.
- Scope 1 covers emissions from our direct operations—like the fuel we use in our fleet.
- Scope 2 includes emissions from the electricity we purchase.
Focused on What Matters Most: Vehicle Emissions
As one of Europe’s largest mobile ITS providers—serving traffic management, construction, utilities, and events sectors—87% of our emissions come from vehicles. So that’s where we’re making big changes.
- We pioneered the use of solar technology in mobile traffic signals. Our SolarLight units run on extended 365-day battery exchange cycles, cutting down significantly on fuel use and carbon output.
- We’re investing in next-gen battery systems, enabling some portable signals to run for a month rather than a week—drastically reducing recharging trips.
- We’re aiming to cut fleet emissions, using the Samsara telematics platform to promote efficient driving, reduce fuel consumption and monitor performance in real-time.
- We’re also trialling electric vehicles and exploring other sustainable options like HVO fuels, which has the potential to slash emissions by up to 90% in compatible vehicles.
A Word from Our CEO
“This is a major milestone for SRL. Our SBTi validation affirms our dedication to helping to combat climate change by aligning our operations with global science-based targets and highlights our commitment to providing customers with increasingly sustainable mobile ITS solutions.”
