SRL’s Urban64®, our intelligent temporary traffic solution, has received a groundbreaking development in its installation process delivering a range of benefits, including a significant reduction of on-site install time.

A proven solution for urban highways projects of all site sizes, Urban64 clients often face challenges related to time constraints, budget limitations, and the need for seamless integration with the wider network infrastructure. Recognising these challenges, SRL refined a revolutionary new install method that address these concerns head-on.

How does it work?

SRL’s Offsite Build strategy is made possible with newly designed blocks and poles which facilitate a more efficient way of transporting the system to site, and thereafter the install and commissioning.

Urban64’s overhead cabling lies a minimum of 6.5m above the carriageway making it suitable for high-speed motorways and junctions. To achieve this, previously, poles were transported horizontally. Once on site, signal heads and cables were attached to poles, which were then placed in blocks. Cabling was then connected with the help of a cherry picker.

With the new design, poles are modular and are placed into blocks before transportation to site occurs. The modular design enables Urban64 poles to be collapsed into thirds, cabled (with signal heads attached) and built at a specialist Urban64 centre, before they are transported to site.

Next, the blocks, poles and signals are transported to, ready to be installed quickly and safely upon arrival to site.

Once on site, the blocks are placed into position and each pole is simply assembled to full height. Signals are then connected, before commissioning can occur, reducing installation time by up to 40%.

Significant Time & Cost Savings

The foremost advantage of the new Urban64 Offsite Build is the remarkable reduction in installation time. SRL found that greatest benefit is evidenced in sites of 18 signals and above, where installation would typically have lasted two nights previously. Using Offsite Build, this can be reduced to one.

The condensed installation period positively influences the overall project timelines and reduces associated traffic management requirements and furthermore, we have reduced our installation fees by 25% as a result of offsite build which allows you to save both time and money when you choose Urban64 for your projects.

Improved Efficiency & Accuracy

Urban64’s Offsite Build strategy enables our experienced team to conduct more thorough testing in our specialist centres before the commissioning team arrive on site. This saves valuable time and reduces the likelihood of delays on site if anomalies are identified.

Reduced Risk

SRL’s new Offsite Build strategy also greatly reduces the number of installers working onsite down to four or five (previously seven) and the time required for install, meaning less people working for less time next to live lanes and roads.

Furthermore, the condensed install time enables the complete Urban64 to be commissioned with minimal disruption as there are less vehicles and people required for fewer nights.

John Cleary, Managing Director, Urban64, added,

“Our new Offsite Build process has transformed the way that our team works, and this is proving to  be enormously beneficial for our customers. Ultimately, it’s crucial that we can deliver a solution that is both easy to install and manage, and we’re confident that we’ve got that.”

Urban64 is a tried and tested solution, delivering cost-certainty, reliability, and efficiency to contractors across the UK.
