Overview
In response to an emergency involving a structurally compromised building at a high traffic crossroads on the High Street, East Sussex County Council commissioned Trenchline Utilities to deliver an immediate and effective temporary traffic control solution. The high profile nature of the location, combined with public safety risks, meant traditional signal deployment would not be sufficient. Trenchline Utilities turned to SRL to identify an advanced solution capable of meeting both logistical and safety requirements. REMOS was selected to deliver reliable, remotely operated traffic management under high-pressure circumstances.
The Challenge
Local authority permit conditions mandated manual control of a four-way signal system during peak times – specifically from 07:30 to 09:30 and 16:00 to 19:00.
This condition presented several operational hurdles:
- Manual control during restricted time windows can be difficult to staff efficiently, as it often requires full-day operative scheduling for short periods of control.
- The site posed a high risk to operatives working near live carriageways. There was an urgent need to reduce disruption to traffic flow while ensuring full compliance with safety protocol
The Solution
After strategic discussions with SRL and in consultation with East Sussex Council, traffic management teams, and public safety coordinators, the REMOS system was
deployed as the primary control solution. Key features and benefits of REMOS in this deployment included:
- Remote Operation: Enabled complete signal control from a secure location,
reducing the need for an onsite operator. - Improved Resource Allocation: Freed up operative time and allowed Trenchline to reassign personnel to other critical tasks during non-peak hours.
- Enhanced Safety: Removed operatives from direct exposure to live traffic environments, mitigating risks of abuse or confrontation.
- Superior Visibility: Provided full video coverage of all four junction approaches – offering better situational awareness than traditional manual control.
The Result
No full-day on-site employees were required as opposed to the three normally deployed on comparable schemes. This promoted cost effectiveness, and
flexibility, reducing staff costs by an estimated 30%.
An analysis of journey times over 350m through the REMOS junction generated favourable results in relation to comparable analysis of nearby permanent signals on the same road. Northbound results were particularly strong:
- AM average 84 seconds – 26% quicker than at the permanent lights;
- PM average 147 seconds – 26% quicker;
- Off-peak average 103 seconds – 79% quicker
“The REMOS system helped us meet compliance requirements, ensure safety, and maintain efficient traffic flow without compromising on service quality. Based
on this positive outcome, we fully intend to continue utilising REMOS in future schemes, especially those requiring flexible, responsive, and safety conscious traffic
management solutions.
This project clearly demonstrates how SRL’s REMOS system delivers value beyond standard temporary traffic solutions. In emergency situations requiring rapid deployment, remote operability, and enhanced safety, REMOS proved to be the smart, modern choice.”
